This book takes a different view on the history of sport. Physical culture and modern sports are discussed by 26 scholars - historians, social scientists, ethnographers, cultural anthropologists - from the point of view of minorities, as issues of power, exclusion from power, cultural diversity.
Critical research on mainstream sports is here research on the "fringes" of sport. The voices speaking are those of minorities, children, women, disappearing traditions, the Third World.
