The articles collected in this volume are a selection of the papers delivered at the Seventh Symposium Platonicum of the International Plato Society held at Würzburg under the auspices of the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften and the Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur. The articles contributed by 48 scholars cover a wide range of topics on the two dialogues under discussion, the Gorgias and the Meno.

They reflect the variety of problems, both philosophical and philological, posed by the two dialogues and Plato's philosophy in general, as well as a diversity of approaches by the contributors.

It is hoped that this volume will form a substantial contribution to the current state of the art and provide a stimulus for further research in the area. The volume includes a Bibliography, a Subject Index and an Index Locorum.

Michel Erler is Professor Ordinarius of Classical Philology at the University of Würzburg. His works on Plato include Der Sinn der Aporien in Platons Dialogen (1987), Platon (München 2006), Platon (Ueberweg Series 2007).

He also has interest in the history of Platonic tradition and religion (he coedited Metaphysik and Religion 2001, Pseudoplatonica 2005) and in Epicurus und the Epicurean tradition (Epikur - Die Schule Epikurs-Lukrez, Ueberweg Series 1994; he edited Epikureismus in der späten Republik und in der Kaiserzeit 2000).

Luc Brisson, Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research (Paris, France), has published widely on both Plato and Plotinus, including bibliographies, translations, and commentaries. He has also published numerous works on the history of philosophy and religions in Antiquity.
