Les concepts d'agir et de pâtir sont connus comme des catégories de l'être, chez Aristote, et sont à ce titre discutés par nombre de philosophes antiques ultérieurs. Ils sont destinés à penser la façon dont les choses en mouvement en viennent à agir les unes sur les autres, tour à tour causes des effets qu'elles produisent et soumises à ceux qu'elles subissent. Platon, qui a souvent semblé, aux yeux même de son élève Aristote, se détourner de l'instabilité des choses en devenir et leur préférer l'invisibilité des objets intelligibles et intemporels, ne se voit guère attribuer de rôle dans l'histoire de ces concepts. Pourtant, en approfondissant ces questions, Aristote se montre en réalité fidèle à l'inspiration de son maître, qui n'invoquait l'intelligible que pour mieux penser le monde en devenir. Le présent ouvrage expose cette philosophie platonicienne de l'agir et du pâtir, par laquelle Platon interroge et reconstruit la physique de ses prédécesseurs, aussi bien que la morale et la politique de ses contemporains, dénonçant leurs limites pour tirer de cette critique une théorie générale des interactions des corps, des âmes et des cités - toutes les choses en devenir, indifféremment naturelles, humaines, sociales. La philosophie du devenir à l'oeuvre dans les dialogues manifeste ainsi l'unité naturelle qui régit les formes du mouvement dans chacun de ces domaines.

The concepts of action and passion are recognized as categories of being by Aristotle, and henceforth discussed as such by later ancient philosophers ; they were crafted to understand the way becoming things interact with one another - in turn acting upon and being acted upon, thus causing effets on many other things whilst being subjected to the effects caused by others. Plato has not been accredited with a major role in the history of these concepts, possibly since he has often been perceived, for instance by his pupil Aristotle, as a philosopher who favours the intemporality of invisible, intelligible objects over the instability of becoming things. But this may not be so simple. Perhaps Plato appealed to invisible principles in order to further understand how moving things behave. Aristotle's delvings into the problems of activity and passivity might indeed be more faithful to Plato than commonly perceived.

This book puts forth Plato's philosophy of action and passion, exposing their limits and moving on to a general theory of the interaction of bodies, of souls and of cities - all things in motion that exist for Plato within the universe.

A philosophy of the becoming of all things is at work in Plato's dialogues, and it manifests the natural unity of all forms of movement, whether cosmic, animal, human or social.
