This book comprises a selection of the articles delivered at the Eighth Symposium Platonicum of the International Plato Society, held in Dublin. The articles cover all the chief topics raised in the Philebus, including dialectic, the nature of pleasure, the system of first principles, and the nature of the good life. The papers represent a fine panorama of current scholarly thinking on the contents of this most interesting and significant dialogue.
Luc Brisson, Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research (Paris, France), has published widely on both Plato and Plotinus, including bibliographies, translations, and commentaries. He has also published numerous works on the history of philosophy and religions in Antiquity.
John Dillon is Emeritus Professor of Greek at Trinity College Dublin, and founder of the Dublin Centre for the Study of the Platonic Tradition. He was President of the International Plato Society, 2004-7.
