Plato's dialogues inspired a long series of authors after him, from his own student Aristotle onward.
The articles in this anthology, selected from the Sixth Annual Conference of the International Society for Neoplatonic Studies, consider various interpretations and reincarnations of Plato's doctrines. Scholars examine such topics as psychology, fate, ethics, aesthetics, and intentionality in the writings of Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch, Apuleius, Alcinous, Plotinus, Augustine, Clement, Grosseteste, Hölderlin, William James, Brentano, and Husserl. The result is a snapshot of current research into the history of Platonism.
John F. Finamore is Professor of Classics at the University of Iowa. He has published extensively on the Platonic tradition, including two books on Iamblichus: Iamblichus and the Theory of the Vehicle of the Soul (Scholars Press, 1985) and (with John Dillon) Iamblichus' De Anima: Text, Translation, and Commentary (Brill 2002).
Robert M. Berchman is Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Dowling College in Long Island, New York and is Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study at Bard College. He has published on Plato, Aristotle, and their traditions and most recently has published Porphyry Against the Christians (Brill 2005).
