A central component of Academia’s publishing program is the field of philosophy. The focus here is particularly on ancient philosophy and the “classical” authors Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Our established international series of publications such as the International Plato Studies, the International Aristotle Studies and the Eleatica have an impact far beyond European borders due to their multilingualism. But modern philosophy also has a firm place in the publishing program with the Jahrbuch für Hegelforschung (Yearbook for Hegel Research), the Wittgensteiniana, and the West-östliche Denkwege (West-East ways of thinking). With the new series Philosophische Praxis (Philosophy in Practice), founded in 2018, the program has also been expanded to include significant research on current topics related to media literacy and digitization.
This series of academic publications includes outstanding monographs and anthologies from all areas of philosophy. So far, works on ancient philosophy, cultural philosophy, aesthetics, epistemology and phenomenology are represented. For over 30 years, this academic series, which Academia Verlag publishes independently, has stood for quality and innovative work in philosophy and is the flagship and reflection of Academia Verlag’s international academic network.
The “Contributions to Applied Ethics” series publish studies in which the principles of normative ethics are used to solve current problems in various areas of life, especially in medicine, ecology and economics. However, these ethical principles must be critically questioned in each case, and because value is placed on strict scientificity, metaethical considerations are also essential in this context.
The series “Beiträge zur Bolzano-Forschung” aims to make the scientific public more familiar with the work of the philosopher Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848). To this end, not only monographs and anthologies on important aspects of his philosophy are published, but also writings by his students as well as documents on his work and its reception.
The Collegium Politicum is an international research network that studies ancient political theory and its reception in the history of political thought. The network was founded in 2000 by Francisco L. Lisi and organises annual meetings of its members, who mainly teach at European universities in different countries. A variety of activities and collaborations take place among the members, such as joint workshops, international conferences, joint publications and exchanges of lecturers, master’s and doctoral students and postdocs. Our book series publishes not only the publications of the permanent members and the annual meetings, but all innovative and high-quality contributions to classical political thought and its reception. We welcome publications by established scholars as well as contributions by young researchers at the beginning of their careers. The latter includes outstanding doctoral theses and post-doctoral dissertations. All papers submitted to the editors are subject to double-blind peer review and must be accepted by the scientific advisory board.
In this series, the social philosopher Johannes Heinrichs brings together his insights into the challenges of our time, imbued with his trademark – reflection systems theory, which reassesses many entrenched patterns of thought in a unique way.
The Eleatics, a school of pre-Socratics, are the focus of this Italian series. Eleatica is the name of a society that studies and debates the works of the pre-Socratics in scholarly meetings. The results of their ‘Eleatic lessons’ are published with the support of the Fondazione Alario per Elea. Also published by Academia since 2019 is the supplementary series Supplementa Eleatica, which publishes articles and monographs on the Presocratics outside the ‘Eleatic Classes’.
This series, manned by an international board of experts, is dedicated to Aristotles works, his philosophical thinking and reception. Monographs, like outstanding scientific theses, are as much a part of it as anthologies.
The series “International Plato Studies”, which has been in existence for more than twenty years, is one of the most important series of publications on international Plato research. It contains relevant studies on numerous aspects of Platonic philosophy, on the Platonic dialogues and on Plato’s reception. The series illuminates Plato’s work in a variety of ways and from different perspectives, resulting in new insights not only into Plato’s thought, but also into the world of antiquity.
This series contains outstanding editions of pre-Platonic philosophers as well as significant new research concerning their thought. It includes, for example, Hermann Diels´ edition of Parmenides with a new preface by Walter Burkert, the improved edition of Heraclitus by Miroslav Marcovitsch and Claudia Zatta’s overview of the pre-Platonic treatment of animals and plants. It was originally founded by Jonathan Barnes, Rafael Ferber and Livio Rossetti, and is currently edited by Bruno Centrone, Rafael Ferber, and Barbara Sattler.
The International Socrates Studies series publishes book-length monographs and collective volumes dealing with the figure and thought of Socrates, his historical context, and the sources of evidence concerning him. Specifically, the series welcomes manuscripts related to reactions to Socrates, positive and negative, the first generation of the Socratic movement, and the history of the reception of Socrates from Antiquity to the present Age.
The Lecturae Platonis series offers studies dedicated to treating Plato’s texts with absolute respect, hence the name “Lecturae”. The series aims to promote an understanding of the philosophical system portrayed by Plato in his works.
For this reason, we publish not only special studies on individual dialogues, but also collective works that examine a single theme. We are also interested in a kind of methodological reflection that goes beyond the limits of a fragmented textual approach and in this way revives the great philosophical and philological tradition and respects Plato’s typical systemic principle of the dominance of the whole over the individual aspects. We also publish contributions that shed light on the relationship between Plato’s philosophy and its successors.
The published articles are mostly written in English in order to reach the widest possible readership for the series.
Heidegger’s philosophy is interwoven within many different contexts that have been neglected or underexposed in the past debates: the connections with logic, normativity, language, as with the ancient thought, with the scholasticism and late scholasticism, with the classical metaphysics, with the philosophical beginning of the early 20th century (Frege), with Kant and Neo-Kantianism, as well as between his position on the phenomenology of Husserl and his school. This research series is focused upon these connections and upon problems concerning law and political ontology to which many of Heidegger’s works are dedicated. Exceptional monographs (especially dissertations) are in these fields included, whose ambition is to document Heidegger’s research during international conferences and smaller workshops. The aim is to measure Heidegger’s thought in its various constellations and horizons, as well as reintroducing it to systematic philosophical dialogue by presenting its fertility within contemporary philosophy.
Philosophy and literature have been related to each other since the dawn of history, and it seems extremely difficult to draw a clear dividing line between them. At the point where philosophy raises fundamental questions about the world and human existence, it encroaches onto a topic area also addressed by poetry and literature, although they use different means in doing so. This means that the relationship between philosophy and literature is not limited to a collection of related or mutual themes, questions and issues, but that it also particularly involves the reciprocal exchange of forms and formats of philosophical and poetic spoken and written expression. This series of publications intends to shed greater light on the fascinating interconnections between philosophy and literature, their affinity, mutual complementarity and differences, and in doing so to investigate both the literary dimensions of philosophy and the philosophical dimensions of literature using relevant case studies and selected problems.
“Philosophieren mit Kindern” (Philosophising with Children) is a long-standing project of the Austrian Society for Philosophy with Children under the direction of Mag. Dr. Dr. h.c. Daniela G. Camhy. The aim is to introduce children to philosophy through stories in a playful way by discussing the questions about life, nature and the world posed in the stories. The stories and accompanying manuals written by the pioneer of children’s philosophy, Matthew Lipman, have been translated and updated for today by Daniela G. Camhy.
The series entitled Philosophische Praxis (Philosophy in Practice) publishes works on modern, practical philosophy that address the challenges of today’s society from philosophical perspectives. It will appeal to both academics and all those interested in philosophy and society who would like to heighten their perception of global events by relating them to ancient and modern philosophy.
The series Philosophische Theorie (Philosophical Theory) contains works dealing with the core disciplines of theoretical philosophy: logic, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, metaphysics and ontology. It will appeal to both academics and all those interested in philosophy who would like to learn more about the respective fields.
The series ProPhil – Projects on Philosophy provides a forum for work on current philosophical topics that are of fundamental importance for academic research and teaching. The series is neither limited to a specific field of philosophy nor to a specific philosophical standpoint; this openness is limited only by the criteria of scientificity and methodological rigour.
Starting since 2019, the Eleatica series gives rise to a second side project, Eleatica Supplementa. The aim of this sub-series is to publish outstanding monographs or essay collections on Eleaticism, so as to offer a further contribute to the scientific literature on the issue. While Eleatica proposes debates among leading specialists in the field, focused on the lectiones magistrales of a well-known scholar, the Supplementa present in-depth studies on specific topics written by scholars that put forward innovative or particularly relevant interpretations. The series is addressed primarily to the community of specialists in Ancient Philosophy, but also to students and more generally the cultured public interested in the origins of Western thought.
Symbolon attempts to bridge the gap between ancient and medieval philosophy. Here, there is a place for works that deal with the reception of ancient thought in late antiquity and the Middle Ages, such as Neoplatonism, Simplicius’ interpretation of Aristotle or Damaskios’ De princiipis.
The now in-house series “Texte zur Philosophie” contains translations and editions of famous and lesser known thinkers from antiquity to modern times, accessibly prepared and introduced by experts.
The series West-östliche Denkwege is not only a forum for the philosophical exchange of ideas, but also constitutes a shared effort towards the truth reached in dialogue not only with East-Asian and Western cultures, but also within the space of Europe itself, to the past and present of which a West–East structure of difference belongs. The primary aim of the series is not simply to compare thinking cultures, but to connect them together in order to make them fruitful for the purposes of a common effort. In dealing with the fundamental topics of theoretical and practical philosophy, political thinking and bioethics, the series aims to encourage a lively discourse between East and West by disclosing a wealth of different traditions.
The series gives access to the philosophical, literary and artistic examination of the life and work of Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) to a broad circle of interested readers.
Carefully edited monographs and thematically composed anthologies by well-known Wittgenstein experts and younger researchers make Wittgenstein’s path of thought accessible in its many ramifications. At the same time, the Wittgensteiniana makes the historical and systematic prerequisites of his work recognisable and opens up the potential that the study of Wittgenstein offers for the sciences and for future philosophy.
In short: The Wittgensteiniana is indispensable for anyone who wants to deal intensively with what is probably the most important philosopher of the 20th century.
